Emmanuel Macron: From political novice to president

Emmanuel Macron, an independent who has never held office, was elected president of France on Sunday, defeating Marine Le Pen. Macron is a 39 year old former investment banker who has been labeled by critics as inexperienced. Macron promises to reform France's welfare and pension system, to fight terrorism by increasing defense spending, and to "put France back at the heart of the EU." What is your opinion of the outcome of the French election?

  1. I am very pleased with the outcome of the French election. Marine Le Pen's campaign was rooted in xenophobia and general hatred. Macron, as a centrist, is much less extreme. Although many people criticize his past as a banker and his inexperience with politics, I have high hopes for him.

  2. I was very happy that Le Pen didn't win the election. She was a racist and xenophobic candidate, and by not electing her France did what America couldn't. Macron doesn't hold those dangerous prejudices, and I'm hopeful that he'll be a great leader for France despite his political inexperience.

  3. Inexperience is far better to have than ignorance and hatred when you're talking politics. I'm really happen with the outcome of the election and am curious to see how the new leadership will influence American politics.

  4. Marine La Pen is really mean and not cool. Emmanuel Macron may be under-qualified and not have enough experience in French politics but I always appreciate an underdog and at least he isn't a jerk. It sounds like he has a vision for France which is a good start and I hope he is successful with his endeavors.

  5. While it's good he defeated La Pen, we simply took the Neocon over the Fascist. I thought that in the weeks leading up to the election there were some great shows of activism, with barricades, sit-ins, and walk outs on the parts of students all around.

  6. While he doesn't have the experience, I believe that the most important quality for a leader is one who not hated by the public. Overall, a leader is for the people and I feel as though Macron is going to do a great job for the people. I am pleased with the outcome of the election.
